Covers: Welsh borders: Herefordshire, Radnorshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire Meetings 2008 - 2009 Our meetings are to help beginners learn their mosses and liverworts, rather than high-powered recording sessions. Please bring sandwiches to all outdoor meetings, which are on Sundays, starting at 10.30 am. You may also wish to bring with you the new keys for the BBS Field-guide, which you can find on-line at www.hosting.sleath.co.uk/bbs (or click on the book cover of the Field-guide on the left-hand side of the BBS web-site’s home page). You are very welcome to suggest venues for future outdoor meetings; please include grid references and details for parking. October 19th Our first meeting of the autumn will be at Brynmawr Farm in the upper Clun valley, Shropshire (SO 218849) by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Trevor Wheeler. Brynmawr is an organic farm, and has a wet meadow and flush draining into a stream with wooded banks. From Clun, take the B4368 to Newcastle and Newtown. In Newcastle, pass the Crown Inn on your right, and after about 50 metres go straight on at the road junction onto a minor road signposted to Two Crosses and Mainstone. After 2.5 miles, turn left at a T-junction. Brynmawr is half a mile up the hill on the left hand side. November 16 th Jonathan Sleath will lead our meeting at Swardon Quarry and Backbury Hill, Herefordshire. Meet in the car park at the small limestone exposure in Swardon Quarry, Checkley (SO 578385). We will then move on to explore Backbury Hill and Adams Rocks. January 18 th Sam Bosanquet will lead us at Llangattock Lingoed (SO 362200) in northern Monmouthshire. Park near the church and public house in the middle of the village, from where we will explore the Full Brook valley, gaining access from Offa’s Dyke Path. Base-rich seams occur in the district’s Old Red Sandstone, so we may find a diverse bryoflora of calcicoles. February 22nd This meeting is a joint one with the Worcestershire bryological group, whose members have invited us to explore dry grassland, scrub, heath and old trees on Bredon Hill. Meet at 10.30 a.m. in the public car park at the picnic spot in Elmley Castle village (SO 983410). Or park in the main street if the car park is full. March 15 thMeet at the car park west of All Stretton, Shropshire (SO 456955) to explore rocks and flushes in Long Batch and Jonathan’s Hollow. These are less frequently visited than several other valleys on the Long Mynd. CONTACT The Border Bryologists programme of meetings is also available on the Herefordshire Botanical Societys pages at http://ralph.cs.cf.ac.uk/HBS/Border.htm.

CAMBRIDGE BRYOLOGICAL EXCURSIONS 2008-2009 We are planning the following excursions for the 2008-2009 season, the last full winter of recording for the Cambridge Bryoflora project. We have now visited 129 of the county’s 134 5-km squares at least once; these excursions include potentially interesting sites which we have not visited recently, or at all, or squares from which we have not yet sampled all the available habitats. On some days we visit a range of sites in two or more 5-km squares, but on others we concentrate on a single large site. The excursions will not be cancelled because of rain, only in the event of snow or frost. Beginners will be welcome at all meetings. Bring a hand lens (×10 or ×20), and some tins or paper packets for collecting material into. If you require transport, please contact any of those listed at the end. Details of some other bryological meetings and one moveable feast are included in square brackets. All our meetings begin at 11am. Sunday 26 October: Fenland stubble fields. A tour of the area around March and Whittlesey, looking for stubble field in suitable bryological condition. Meet at the S. end of Workhouse Drove, Wimblington, TL419920. Saturday 8 November: Bassingbourn Barracks, TL34NW. We have permission to visit this large site, which we have never been to before. There is a training ground with a lake and nearby scrub/ woodland. Please let Chris Preston if you intend to come on this meeting by Wednesday 5 November, and tell him the registration number of the vehicle you will be arriving in (if you are travelling by car). This will help get us into the site with a minimum of delay. On arrival, report to the main gate on the west side of the main road (A1198) at TL341456. Sunday 23 November: Isleham area. The largest of the five ‘fragments’ of 5-km squares in the county we have not yet visited is TL67NE, where the county boundary runs along the edge of the River Lark. Meet at the east end of East Fen Road, TL656747, where the road splits into two tracks, Ferry Drove and East Fen Drove. Saturday 6 December: Shepreth & Meldreth, TL34NE. So far we have only recorded 62 species in this square, a low total for S. Cambs. There must be more! Meet at Shepreth church, TL392474, for an exploration of the churchyards and streamside walks in these villages and, if we get permission, the famous garden at Docwra’s Manor. Sunday 11 January: Our first meeting of the year is usually held in under-recorded areas of Fenland, and this time the plan is to look at TL39NE, 39SE and 48NW, three of the four complete squares in the county from which we have recorded fewer than 40 species. Meet by the chapel at Westry, TL399983. Saturday 24 January: Conington church, TL36NW, and Elsworth Wood, TLSW. We have permission to visit Elsworth Wood, an ancient wood which had a good set of ancient woodland species when we last visited it in 1982 and also Pleurozium schreberi, which we have not seen anywhere in the county since 1999. Rendezvous at Conington church, TL320660 (NB don’t confuse this Conington with Conington, Hunts!). Sunday 8 February: Kingfishers Bridge, Wicken, TL57SW. We visited this recently created private wetland in 2001, and the purpose of this visit is to see how it has developed since then. Since our visit the flowering plant colonists have included Cladium mariscus, so who knows what bryophytes might have arrived. Meet by the track W. of High Fen Farm, TL 545728. Saturday 21 February: Decoy Pond, TL35SW. This is a pond with surrounding woodland which we have never visited. We will go on to an ancient wood in this area. Meet at the NE edge of the Decoy Pond site, TL321524. Leader: Simon Damant. Sunday 8 March: Childerley estate, TL36SE. We have records of only 14 species from this estate, made between 1933 and 1959, but they include both ancient woodland plants and calcifuges. We hope to visit a range of habitats including New Wood and Honeyhill Wood. Access is off the old A428 at Childerley Gate – make sure you have an up-to-date map or consult the Get-a-map website. Leave the A428 at Hardwick and then take the old St Neots road until you cross over the dual carriageway, turn right on the Childerley estate road and continue on past the Hall, parking at TL356616 (near the ‘54’ metres spot height on the 1: 25,000 map). Jonathan Shanklin, who has recorded flowering plants here, will lead us round. Saturday 21 March: Ancient woodland, TL65NE, NW. There are numerous ancient woodlands in this area, and we are seeking permission to visit one of the larger woods which we have not been to in our current recording period. Meet at Stetchworth church, TL 642589. [1-7 April: BBS Spring Meeting, Ayrshire. The main BBS meeting of the year. There are daily field excursions, and all bryologists are welcome to attend, whether or not they are members of the Society. This is a free service provided by Shotover Wildlife. The Oxford Mossing Group provides ongoing field and microscope sessions after the Mosses and Liverworts Identification Courses as a way of supporting learners with bryophyte identification, both in microscope keying and building field skills. The Oxford Mossing Group season runs from October to March and sessions start with a morning field visit (in and around Oxfordshire), usually followed by a microscope session in the afternoon near the field site. High power and dissecting microscopes are available for use. Contact Jacqueline Wright (jawright@shotover-wildlife.org.uk) for further details

This is a new group that has been set up to record sites in Wiltshire, Dorset, and parts of Somerset. We are a small informal group that goes out to Worcestershire sites to record and learn about bryophytes . Our broad aim is to assist everyone, especially those who are new to mosses and liverworts, to become more experienced and confident at identifying bryophytes. We have no formal membership or constitution and each person goes out at his/her own risk. Beginners are always very welcome, the only equipment needed is a hand lens (x10 or x20) and some paper packets for collecting specimens. Whilst we usually spend the morning concentrating on bryophyte identification, during the afternoon our attention tends to wander towards more general natural history, dependent on the interests of the individuals present on the day. Some people stay all day whilst some people leave at midday . I have listed below broad venues and habitats for our autumn/winter 07/08 programme. If you are interested in joining us on any of the field trips please contact me (Dr Ann Hill on 01905 359554 or ann@gaehill.f9.co.uk) and I will let you know full details i.e. access, parking etc for the day.
